About
Edward and Alphonse Elric grow up learning alchemy, an art built on the principle that gaining something requires surrendering something of comparable value. Believing their skill can overcome death, they attempt the practice alchemists are forbidden to perform. The result destroys their bodies instead of restoring the person they miss: Edward loses a leg, Alphonse loses his entire physical form, and Edward gives up an arm to bind his brother's soul to a suit of armor. Metal prosthetics allow Edward to move forward, and he becomes a State Alchemist while the brothers pursue a way to become whole again. Their best hope appears to be the Philosopher's Stone, an object said to let an alchemist escape the usual limits of exchange. The search draws them through a country shaped by its military and puts them beside officers including Roy Mustang, Riza Hawkeye, and Maes Hughes. What begins as a personal mission gradually exposes hidden connections between the stone, the nation's past, and a conspiracy with consequences far beyond the Elric family. Edward and Alphonse must decide how much they are willing to risk without surrendering the humanity they are trying to reclaim.
