Hunter x Hunter
Hunter x Hunter (2011) streams on Netflix, Crunchyroll, and Hulu, with additional options on Amazon Prime Video and free-to-watch Tubi. This is the adaptation to start with: 148 episodes that open as a bright, big-hearted shounen adventure and quietly grow into one of the most ambitious and emotionally ruthless stories the genre has ever produced. Gon's search for his father is the hook, but it's the friendships, the tactical Nen battles, and the show's willingness to go genuinely dark that make it a desert-island pick.
About
Hunters are the world's elite licensed adventurers, the people trusted to track down criminals, chart untamed wilds, and recover lost treasures. Gon Freecss grew up thinking his father was long gone, until he learns the man is alive somewhere out there, one of those legendary Hunters. So Gon sets out to earn the same license, convinced it's the road that leads back to him. That path runs through the Hunter Examination, a brutal gauntlet with a reputation for killing far more applicants than it ever passes. Along the way he falls in with three unlikely companions: Kurapika, who carries a cold need for vengeance; Leorio, blunt and money-minded but chasing a doctor's dream; and Killua, a sharp-witted boy raised by a family of assassins. What begins as a test of survival becomes a friendship that carries them into ever stranger and more dangerous corners of the world.
