Ponyo

7.9MOVIE · 1 eps · 2008

Ponyo is a compact Studio Ghibli fantasy built around a goldfish princess whose wish to live on land sends the sea surging into everyday life. Max and Netflix carry the film, with both subtitles and an English dub listed on the current page. Released in 2008, this 101 minute movie is especially approachable for families, though its restless water imagery and odd magic give older viewers plenty to enjoy. Expect bright movement and very little cynicism, all guided by a child's direct sense of wonder. It is also released as Gake no Ue no Ponyo.

About

A curious goldfish slips away from her ocean home and is found by a young boy on the shore. Fascinated by him and by the human world, she chooses the name Ponyo and becomes determined to live on land. Her desire has consequences for the balance between sea and shore, bringing strange weather and rising water around the people she has come to care about. The film follows the children's bond as they face that upheaval together. Its premise has the shape of a seaside fairy tale, but the focus stays on trust and the enormous conviction children can bring to a simple promise.
