About
After an air raid kills their mother and leaves their father away at sea, teenage Seita and his little sister Setsuko are left to fend for themselves in a country running out of food and mercy. Cast off by relatives, the two set up a home of their own and cling to small joys, a tin of candy, a swarm of fireflies, even as hunger and pride close in. Directed by Isao Takahata, it's an unflinching, deeply humane portrait of the cost of war borne by children.
