Ajin
Ajin streams on Netflix. The cult thriller about immortals hunted by the state — a cold, clever cat-and-mouse where the scariest character is on nobody's side but his own.
About
Kei Nagai learns he's an Ajin — one of a handful of humans who cannot die — the way most of them do: by dying in an accident and standing back up in front of witnesses. Ajin have no rights; officially they're 'protected,' in reality they're captured and experimented on endlessly, because how do you outlaw torturing something that resets? Kei's response isn't heroism — he's calculating, self-interested, and disturbingly adaptable, which makes him fascinating to follow. Opposite him stands Satou, an older Ajin waging gleeful war on the government, whose cheerful nihilism makes him one of anime's great villains. The tactics — death as a tool, resets mid-combat — are relentlessly inventive.
