My Neighbors the Yamadas

6.9MOVIE · 1 eps · 1999

My Neighbors the Yamadas streams on Max and Netflix, so both big-library subscriptions have you covered. It's the odd one out in the Studio Ghibli catalog — a watercolor comic-strip comedy directed by Isao Takahata — and that's exactly why it's worth your evening: no other Ghibli film feels this loose, this funny, or this true about family life.

About

The Yamadas are a gloriously ordinary household: a salaryman dad, a mom with zero enthusiasm for housework, a grandmother with a razor tongue, a teenage son embarrassed by all of them, and a small daughter with a very big voice. Instead of one plot, the film strings together vignettes of their daily life — arguments over the TV remote, forgotten kids at department stores, marriage advice delivered sideways — each sketch drawn in a soft watercolor style that looks like a newspaper comic come to life. It's episodic, gentle, and quietly wise about what keeps a family stuck together.
