Only Yesterday
Only Yesterday streams on Netflix and Max. Isao Takahata's quiet Ghibli masterpiece — a Tokyo office worker's countryside trip becomes a conversation with her ten-year-old self. The most grown-up film in the Ghibli catalog.
About
Taeko is in her late twenties, single, competent, and vaguely unconvinced by the shape of her Tokyo life. Taking her holiday on a safflower farm in the countryside, she finds the trip has stowaways: vivid, uninvited memories of her fifth-grade year — first crushes, family disappointments, a pineapple that didn't taste like the dream of it, the small humiliations that quietly calibrated who she became. Takahata cuts between the pastel softness of memory and the earthy realism of the present, letting the two timelines interrogate each other until Taeko has to answer the question the film has been gently building: is the life she has the one she actually wants?
