The forests outside Tokyo are being flattened for suburbs, and the tanuki who live there — jovial, lazy, gifted shapeshifters — decide to fight back the only way they know: transformation, sabotage, and spectacular supernatural pranks. They haunt construction sites, stage ghost parades, and study the old masters of disguise, all while their food and territory keep shrinking. Takahata plays it as riotous folk comedy for an hour, then lets the reality underneath surface: this is a war the tanuki cannot win, and the film's final stretch lands with a grief that sneaks past all the laughter. Few films are this funny and this heartbroken at once.
