In another, a tough young woman named Kiruko and a boy named Maru travel across a ruined, monster-haunted Japan in search of that same 'heaven,' surviving on wits and a strange bond. The series slowly braids the two together, doling out its mysteries with real craft and a striking visual style, and never letting you feel entirely safe. It's beautiful, eerie, and genuinely gripping.
