The End of Evangelion

8.5MOVIE Β· 1 eps Β· 1997

This 1997 movie supplies the theatrical conclusion to the original Neon Genesis Evangelion series. Netflix carries it, and newcomers should finish the series before pressing play. Its 87-minute runtime moves from a violent attack on NERV into the psychological and metaphysical conflict promised by the television ending. Production I.G. and Gainax turn that shift into a film that feels deliberately overwhelming rather than tidy. It suits viewers who want difficult science fiction, raw drama, and an ending that asks for interpretation. Anyone looking for a self-contained mecha movie should begin elsewhere, since the emotional stakes depend on what came before.

About

The Angels are gone, but NERV has no chance to recover. SEELE moves against the organization and pushes the Human Instrumentality Project toward completion while Shinji can barely respond to the crisis and Asuka remains incapacitated. The assault forces the remaining people inside NERV to confront both an immediate military threat and the collapse of the world they know. As events grow stranger, the film turns inward, examining isolation and the painful risk of living alongside other people. This is a bleak, intense continuation of the series rather than a fresh adventure, and the larger outcome is best encountered without further detail.
