About
A gifted Westalian operative working under the name Twilight is assigned to get close to Donovan Desmond, an Ostanian political figure whose actions could endanger the fragile peace between the two nations. Direct access is nearly impossible, so the agent adopts a new identity as Loid Forger and constructs a family that can help him enter the social orbit surrounding Desmond's son's elite school. Loid believes he is selecting ordinary civilians for the roles. His new daughter, Anya, secretly possesses psychic abilities and immediately understands much of the deception around her. His new wife, Yor, is hiding an entirely different life as a professional assassin. None of the three can safely reveal the truth, although Anya's mind reading gives her a private view of both adults' secrets. The Forgers must now pass as a respectable household while Loid pursues his mission, Yor protects her cover, and Anya tries to keep the arrangement from falling apart. Their unusual home life turns errands, school concerns, and social expectations into comic tests where a small mistake can expose far more than anyone intends. Beneath the espionage setup, the story follows strangers learning how to care for one another while each assumes the family began as an act.
