In the Cosmic Era, humanity has split into two peoples: ordinary 'Naturals' and genetically enhanced 'Coordinators,' and the two are at war. Kira Yamato, a Coordinator living a civilian life on the neutral colony of Heliopolis, gets dragged into the fight when enemy forces raid the colony to steal the Earth Alliance's prototype mobile suits. Forced into the cockpit of the Strike Gundam to protect his friends, Kira is horrified to find himself fighting Athrun Zala — his closest childhood friend, now on the other side. What follows is a war story built on that wound: friends turned enemies, ideals colliding with atrocity, and two young men trying to find a way to stop killing each other.
