Kotaro Lives Alone
Kotaro Lives Alone streams exclusively on Netflix. It's a short, deceptively cute series that will absolutely wreck you — a four-year-old renting his own apartment sounds like a comedy setup, and it is one, right up until the show lets you understand why he's alone.
About
Kotaro is a small boy who moves into a run-down apartment building entirely by himself — paying rent, doing his own shopping, speaking in weirdly formal samurai-drama Japanese. His next-door neighbor, a broke manga artist named Karino, gets reluctantly pulled into keeping an eye on him, and so does the rest of the building's cast of misfits. The comedy of a tiny kid out-adulting the adults around him slowly gives way to something more tender: the neighbors piecing together the neglect that made Kotaro so self-sufficient, and quietly becoming the family he never had.
