About

In an alternate Edo-era Japan, aliens have conquered the country and outlawed swords, leaving the once-proud samurai class adrift. Gintoki Sakata scrapes by as an odd-jobs freelancer who'll take almost any gig that pays, alongside his straight-man apprentice Shinpachi and the monstrously strong alien girl Kagura. Most of the time it's an anarchic parody that skewers everything from rival anime to pop culture, but it can pivot without warning into genuinely devastating action-drama. It's enormous, gloriously uneven by design, and adored for exactly that unpredictability.
