Light Yagami is the kind of top-of-the-class student who has already decided the world is rotten and beneath him — then a black notebook drops out of the sky and hands him the means to act on it. It belongs to Ryuk, a death god who grew bored of his own realm and tossed his Death Note down into ours; whoever holds it can kill anyone simply by writing that person's name. Light claims it, appoints himself judge and executioner, and starts quietly erasing the criminals he's decided the world is better off without. What turns this 2006 Madhouse production into a 37-episode pressure cooker is the pushback: a secretive genius detective who goes by the single letter L takes up the hunt, and the two slide into a suffocating chess match where one wrong move is fatal. It plays less like a story about a magic notebook than a duel of intellects circling a far darker question — does anyone, no matter how brilliant, deserve to play god?
