In Academy City, superhuman ability is a science — students are scanned, trained, and ranked by esper level. Touma Kamijou sits at the bottom with a power that doesn't even register: his right hand, the Imagine Breaker, cancels any supernatural ability it touches, along with, he insists, his own luck. His already unlucky life detonates when he finds a young nun named Index hanging over his balcony rail — a girl carrying a forbidden library in her head and pursued by mages the scientific city officially says can't exist. Touma's habit of punching his way into other people's problems drags him ever deeper into the fault line between the city's esper establishment and the magical world outside it.
