A Certain Magical Index
A Certain Magical Index opens the franchise's main story by placing scientific espers and secretive magic users on a collision course. Crunchyroll, Hulu, Netflix, and Tubi TV are the listed legal services, with Tubi TV offering a free option supported by ads. This finished 2008 TV season runs for 24 episodes and favors supernatural confrontations shaped by two competing systems of power. It suits viewers who like a large setting revealed through successive conflicts. The amount of franchise groundwork can make the season feel crowded, but Academy City's measured approach to abilities gives the magical disputes a distinctive counterweight.
About
Academy City trains students with superhuman powers, tests their abilities, and assigns rankings based on the results. Touma Kamijou ranks at the bottom despite possessing a strange right hand that cancels any supernatural effect it touches. He believes the same hand is responsible for his relentless bad luck. His ordinary routine changes when Index, a young nun with forbidden knowledge stored in her memory, appears at his balcony while escaping from mages. Touma's decision to help draws him beyond the scientific explanations promoted by the city and into disputes involving both espers and magic users. A Certain Magical Index follows his increasing involvement without giving away the larger mysteries behind either side.
