About
Kyoto belongs to three populations: humans going about their business, tengu sulking on rooftops, and tanuki — shapeshifting raccoon dogs — running their society in the spaces between. Yasaburo Shimogamo is the third of four tanuki brothers, a cheerful idler who transforms into whatever amuses him and avoids responsibility like it's contagious. But his family lives in the shadow of a catastrophe: their father, once the most respected tanuki in the city, ended up in a hot pot — eaten by a human dining circle called the Friday Club. Between caring for a washed-up old tengu, sparring with the unreadable human Benten, and rival relatives scheming for power, Yasaburo keeps circling the question his whole family avoids: how their brilliant father let himself be caught.
