Gankutsuou

7.9TV · 24 eps · 2004

Gankutsuou recasts The Count of Monte Cristo as a science fiction tragedy with a striking patterned look. Crunchyroll carries the complete series. Its 24 episodes reward patience: the early social visits and polite conversations are pieces of a revenge plot whose meaning grows clearer as relationships begin to strain. The visual design can feel unusual at first because textures appear fixed across moving clothes and surfaces, but that deliberate effect gives the show an identity few TV anime share. Watch it if you enjoy mystery built through social tension, a measured pace, and drama in which sympathy does not fall neatly on one side.

About

Albert de Morcerf is a young aristocrat weary of Parisian high society when he encounters the Count of Monte Cristo at a festival on the moon. The Count is wealthy, courteous, and surrounded by unanswered questions. Fascinated by him, Albert opens the doors to his family and friends, unaware that the meeting fits a plan already in motion. As the Count enters their social circle, old wrongdoing begins to press against the comfortable lives built over it. The familiar revenge tale is viewed largely through Albert, who admires the very man preparing to overturn his world. That perspective keeps the mystery intimate and makes each revelation matter as much for the relationships it damages as for the scheme it advances.
