# Sung Jinwoo

Sung Jinwoo makes the job title Hunter sound like something you might wish a person would give up. Put it beside World's Weakest Hunter and the attraction becomes uncomfortable: I want to watch him, but I also want to object to the terms on which he is being judged. That is a better reason to care about him than any promise of spectacular action. A reputation that blunt encourages you to treat a person as a result already calculated. Jinwoo is worth your attention because watching him gives you a reason to resist that calculation, even while the language of strength keeps tempting you back into it.

## Personality

I find sympathy a more useful starting point for Jinwoo than admiration. Admiration can become a demand that a character keep impressing you; sympathy leaves room to care about somebody before you have decided what they are worth. With him, the word weakest makes that distinction particularly sharp. You can hear it as an invitation to dismiss him, or you can notice how ugly dismissal sounds when it attaches itself to a person. My preference is to keep that discomfort alive. If your only interest is deciding whether he deserves a better ranking, you have accepted the same narrow measure that makes his introduction sting.

## Sung Jinwoo's Story

### Spoiler-free introduction

The early foothold is straightforward: Sung Jinwoo is a Hunter whose reputation gives you very little encouragement to associate that work with prestige. Let that be enough to begin. There is an immediate tension in a professional identity that sounds capable and a reputation that undercuts it so completely. I like having that tension before having a reason to cheer. It makes the act of paying attention feel consequential, because the easiest response would be to write him off. Go into the opening with some patience for that uneasy investment. You do not need to decide in advance whether you are watching somebody admirable to want his story to matter.

### Spoilers beyond the opening Hunter introduction

Guild Master is another of Jinwoo's roles, and it changes the terms on which I think about his Hunter identity. A title associated with leadership invites a different standard of judgment: personal capability alone stops being a satisfying measure. I want to think about responsibility when I read that title beside his name. Detective adds a separate point of interest. That occupation makes attention and judgment useful lenses for considering him, rather than treating strength as the only subject available. These roles are why I would resist reducing a discussion of Jinwoo to who could beat whom. His professional identities give that discussion somewhere else to go, even if comparisons of power are what first brought you to him.

Aleks Le provides Sung Jinwoo's English voice. If you prefer watching in English, that is the performance you will be following as you get to know him.

Yes, particularly if being asked to write somebody off makes you want to look closer. I find that initial resistance a stronger hook than treating him as a name you are supposed to be excited about already.
